How to run a Political Campaign
There are myriad approaches and steps to run a political campaign. Some work and some do not. Some just work some of the time. An educated plan will eliminate unnecessary work and expenses. You must be “in the know” to win a contested race. But, that doesn’t mean what you probably think. It’s not nearly as much being “connected” as it is being informed. There are three very important things to know if you want to win.

Know Thyself
You must understand yourself as well as your family and friends. Why are you running for office? Can your family stand the stress (there is always stress for the family and not nearly the pay-off to them as there is to the successful candidate.) Can you afford to run? Can you afford to serve if elected? Will you friends really get behind you? What do you believe in? What are you willing to fight for? Can you debate? Can you speak in public? You must do a thorough inventory and be brutally honest with yourself from the very beginning.
Know Thy Voters
After all, these are the people who can elect or defeat you. In your electorate, who will actually get out and vote? (You’ll be surprised how few.) To what party is their allegiance? What demographics apply? (Income, education, occupations?) What are the issues that are important to them? You need a voter list with voting history, newly registered voters and all the available demographics and the computer tools to analyze the data.
Know Thy Opponent
If you are running a contested race, you must know everything possible about your opponent, both good and bad, strengths and weaknesses. How are they perceived by the voters? On what issues can they claim to be experts? How much money can they spend on the race? Do they have political experience or supporters who do? Opposition research is critical to every race.
